Biography

After High School I joined the navy and spent a tour in Vietnam on the USS Dennis J. Buckley, DD808. It was in the navy that I learned the discipline I so desperately needed. It was in the navy that I also realized what I wanted to do with my life, and so, I pursued my engineering degree.

After graduation, I went to work as an engineer at the Joseph Farley Nuclear Plant where my responsibilities included installation of raceway in the auxiliary building. From there, I was transferred to a coal fired plant under construction outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. Being from the south, I decided I never wanted to work in the cold again, so I sought a job at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station. I spent twenty years there working in various quality assurance and maintenance jobs—my favorite being section leader of predictive maintenance.

After retirement, I began earnestly working in the cabinetmaking and woodworking industry. I loved every minute of it, and so I opened Penick’s Custom Woodworking—a small one-man business. I still spend as much time as possible in my shop but find my current interest as a teacher takes most of my time.

I have been married to Ginger Penick for thirty-eight years, and we have two children and nine grandchildren.

Biography

I grew up in rural central Pennsylvania. As a child, I was always lingering around the kitchen. Eventually, I joined in with my mother and prepared the family meals.

My first job, during high school, was as a line cook at a local restaurant. It was logical that my post-secondary decision would lead me to the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts. Since receiving an associates of applied specialized technology: culinary arts, I have found myself employed in various culinary path ways. I have food service experience in fine dining, ski resorts, guest ranches, retirement communities, children’s camps, outfitters, and family-style restaurants. In total I have 12 years experience working in the hospitality. I found myself in Wickenburg Arizona employed as the chef at the Flying E Ranch.

I recently received a standard certificate in family and consumer sciences from the Arizona Department of Education. I’m now sharing my years of experience in culinary arts with the children of Wickenburg High School. I enjoy watching the kid’s reactions when they produce a delicious new flavor or recipe. It’s also cool when the “Saguaro Blossom” patrons react by acknowledging, “the students prepared this…..ummmmm.”

I was born and raised in Wisconsin, the second of five children (three sisters and one brother). I come from a very large family. Like all good cheese-heads, it’s all about the Packers and the Badgers. When I graduated from college, I moved 1500 miles away to sunny Arizona. My parents got even and followed when they retired; they now live three miles from both me and Duck (one of my sisters). I am currently blessed to have "joint-custody" of two very entertaining dogs (Ally and Lilly), who condescend to live with me when they are not being spoiled rotten by my parents. I’m a voracious reader, love to draw, grow my own food, and go on long walks. Any time left over is spent as adjunct faculty at the community college teaching biology and/or chemistry.

Classes taught:

  • General Chemistry
  • Honors Chemistry
  • Honors Physics

I teach my classes as "guided inquiry" in a cooperative learning environment. I place heavy emphasis on laboratories and hands-on learning activities in the classroom.

While I have athletes from many different sports and those who are just trying to be healthier, I do not give out grades based on how much the student can lift. My grading policy in weight training is all based on participation. I will allow students to have one day per month as a “sick” day, so that if they are sick they don’t have to do a workout. If an illness is extended or the student has an injury the student would be allowed to do other work such as writing a review of an article that is dealing with weight lifting, training or some other issue regarding athletics, health.
